Chips get discontinued. Suppliers move on. A part that was easy to buy last year can vanish from the market this year. This is component obsolescence, and it is one of the quietest risks to any long-life build. What is component obsolescence?

Component obsolescence is when a part is no longer made or supplied. The manufacturer stops production, or the part reaches the end of its life. It still works perfectly. You simply cannot buy it any more.

For a short-run product this is rarely a problem. For a product that must stay in production for years, it is a serious one. One obsolete part can hold up a whole assembly, and a whole order with it.

Why obsolescence hits long-life products hardest

The longer a product stays in production, the more likely its parts will go obsolete. Sectors like defence, rail, marine and subsea, and medical feel this most. Their products are built to last, and they cannot be redesigned on a whim.

A single change might need requalification, safety sign-off or customer approval. So the pressure is to keep building the same design, with the same parts, for as long as possible. Obsolescence works directly against that. It is a headache that engineers and product developers know all too well.

The warning signs to watch for

Obsolescence rarely arrives without warning. If you know what to look for, you can act early, while you still have options. Here are the signs that matter most.

End-of-life and product change notices

Suppliers issue end-of-life (EOL) and product change notices when a part is being wound down. These give you a window to act. Missing them is how a build gets caught out.

Long and rising lead times

A part that used to arrive in weeks now takes months. Growing lead times often signal a part on its way out, or a supplier losing interest in making it.

Single-source parts

If only one manufacturer makes a part, you have no fallback. A single-source component is a risk long before it ever goes obsolete.

Your options when a part goes obsolete

When a part reaches end of life, you have several routes open to you. The right one depends on cost, timescale and how critical the part is.

Last-time buy

A last-time buy means buying enough stock to cover future demand before the part disappears. It buys you time. The trick is forecasting the right quantity, so you neither overspend nor run short later.

Form, fit and function alternatives

Often another part will do the same job. A form, fit and function match slots straight into the same footprint, with the same behaviour. Where one exists, it is usually the cleanest fix.

Redesign and requalification

Sometimes there is no direct swap. The board needs a small redesign to take a new part. This costs more, so it is a last resort. Done well, though, it can extend a product’s life by many years.

Managed stock

For critical parts, holding managed stock keeps a buffer on the shelf. Your manufacturer stores the components and draws them down as you build, so a build never stalls for want of a part.
